Abu Simbel
You
I ran into a Taiwanese traveler for Abu Simbel started 4 am to visit the 4-hr one way site near the Aswan dam hosted immense statues of Ramesses II at the Great Temple, a massive archaeological rescue sponsored by UNESCO in the 1960s. By far my favorite site in Egypt. One friend made it recently to see twice a year, on February and October 20, the rays of the sun penetrated the sanctuary and illuminated the sculpture on the back wall. The sculptures were in such a good conditions which make me wonder how much touch-ups have been done.
